A pharmaceutical company that's been accused of selling counterfeit versions of its blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra for years has been sentenced to three years in prison.
The drugmaker was paid $1.2 billion in kickbacks to sell in the US market after it sold a fake version of the drug in China in 2013.
The company, based in China, was ordered to pay $1.5 billion in restitution to the victims of the counterfeit drugs scandal.
The court's sentence was announced Monday.
In a statement released on condition of anonymity, the company said it was "unimpressed" by the court's decision. It stressed that it would "continue to vigorously defend the actions taken by the company and the integrity of our company."
Viagra, which is made by Eli Lilly, was originally developed by Pfizer, the world's biggest pharmaceutical company, which has also bought US rival Cialis. Lilly bought the drug from a rival drugmaker after years of litigation and is now seeking billions of dollars in back pay.
The company says it had the drugs sold in the US market in 2013 for about $1.2 billion a year, and said it was making millions of dollars off the drugs through the counterfeit companies.
Pfizer said it was in talks to sell the counterfeit versions of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra in the US market.
The drugs, which are manufactured by Eli Lilly and Eli Lilly, were sold to the companies via a series of deals that started in late 2013 and included $2 billion in kickbacks from the companies.
The court's sentencing has been scheduled to be heard in Philadelphia on May 27. A court spokesman declined to comment.

He said his client has been in court on several occasions since he was arrested in 2012. "He said he was going through a divorce, and then went into the bedroom and said "I didn't want to."
He said he had no idea how much of the money was in the company's coffers.
